Match Reports 2009/10

Welwyn & Hatfield Volleyball Club

Hatfield open season with 3-2 victory!

Hatfield win 3-2 away to Harriers Hawks! It was a very passionately played match, with plenty of noise when things went well.  We deserved the win as we were always a set up or equal in sets. Man of the match was Gary who played outside and won us a lot of points with his strong hits that generally didn't come back. Also our serving was very consistent. Our team was Guy, Andy, Iain, Sylvester, Gary and Philippe. Thanks to all those who played.

Ladies win against Berkhamsted 3-1!

Well done for the fantastic game last night, it was a considerable WIN!

Score:

16-25 lost
27-25 win
25-20 win
25-16 win

I think Olga's single setting is working brilliantly: well done Olga for great court coverage and super setting, just need to work on higher arm setting to avoid any calls for carrying, a minor point.

The first set we played we were in front all the way until they made a substitution and we didn't win a point after that! I think we lost that set on lack of confidence at the end and two people going for a ball and nobody taking it! This is where calling is so important. We must still be more vocal on court, taking a ball, and attacking.

The next 3 sets were brilliant and I think we have a really strong team this season. Serving, blocking and attaching from all sides of the court worked brilliantly. Well done to all for playing so well and for all ladies that attended.

WIN WIN WIN

Cant wait for the next match!!
- Lynne (a very proud Captain)

Hatfield v VK Barnet 6th Feb 2010

Firstly, a thank you to all the match officials for giving up their saturday afternoon to help ref and score. And thank you to all those who played in the game. What went well? Our attacks from front court and from back court were consistent, hit hard or well placed from everyone. We started off by making plenty of noise and we were positive which helped us win the first set. I think everyone gave their all and it was an improved performance compared to the previous 2 matches. Shot of the match was Lynne's acutely angled cross court spike at set point up in the first set! What can we do better next time? Our serves need to go lower over the net so that they don't go out the back (mine in particular). Our receiving needs to improve - it worked better when we had 4 people in receive (2 short and 2 deep) and the person at position 3 taking the set (keeping it simple). Also our defence could be better - we need to block short attacks, close the gap between our blockers and be able to dig up hard struck spikes from the opposition.
- Thanks again, Guy.
